Chapter Eleven

With his car loaded full of groceries and a passenger seat occupied by Mamaw’s takeout boxes and drinks, he parked in front of the Cherry on Top Cupcake Shop. His heart was beating faster than he was used to, and a fleeting fear of another heart attack sent him into panic mode. He felt for his pulse and checked his smart watch. 106 beats per minute. Too fast, considering he wasn’t doing anything strenuous.

Despite the panic spreading from his chest to his limbs and head, Cody relaxed into his seat. It’s not your heart, he told himself. This wave will pass in a few minutes and you’ll be fine. He inhaled, held his breath, then exhaled. Inhaled, held his breath, and exhaled again. Just when his heartbeat settled down, he noticed Jenna standing behind the shop door. She unlocked it to let him in.

He had waited all week for a chance to see her and work on his low-carb cupcakes with her. His worst fear was that he would mess things up with her again.

A few palpitations later, he closed his eyes, took a final deep breath, and grabbed the food boxes from the passenger seat.

“It’s getting better. My doctor said I’m healing nicely, and I can try keeping it off. It’s still really sore, and I’m learning what I can and cannot do yet.”

His doctor training kicked in. “What medication are you on? When do you start physical therapy?”

She laughed. “Do I detect a hint of jealousy? He’s a good doctor, and yes, he already has me doing some exercises to get my mobility back. Physical therapy starts next week.” Jenna nodded down at the boxes she was holding. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to put these in the kitchen now. I’m starving!”

“Sorry,” he said. “I got carried away. I’ll grab the groceries and drinks and then join you for dinner.”

Cody grabbed the bags of almond flour, the monk fruit sweetener, and the other ingredients he had purchased from one of the larger grocery stores in Savannah. Somehow, he managed to open the glass door to the bakery with one finger. “Thank you, ninja training,” he whispered, then squeezed through the opening before it closed on him again.

“Just set all the stuff down on the counter by the mixer.”

Cody saw something that resembled something like a giant kitchen aide and dropped the bags next to it.

By the time he had carried in the
